Budget 2025 is focused on protecting core social programs that Canadians rely on, while making generational investments in our country, to build the strongest economy in the G7.
Right here in Edmonton, Budget 2025 delivers meaningful support for local organizations doing essential work
- $2.9 million for the Bissell Centre to expand services that help vulnerable Edmontonians find stability and support.
- $2.3 million for Rapid Fire Theatre, ensuring local arts, culture, and youth programming continue to thrive.
Putting more money back in your pocket
- Since July 1, 2025, our middle-class tax cut has been saving Canadians up to $420 per person — helping nearly 22 million Canadians keep more of what they earn.
- Automatic tax filing for lower-income Canadians starting for the 2026 tax-year, ensuring Canadians receive the benefits they are eligible for with less paperwork.
- Effective April 1, 2025, the federal consumer fuel charge was repealed, ending the carbon price for everyday fuel use while refocusing carbon-pricing efforts on industrial emitters, reducing emissions and supporting Canada’s clean economy.
- Elimination of the GST on new homes up to $1 million for first-time homebuyers.
- GST-free construction of student housing, supporting affordability for young Canadians.
- The National School Food Program is now permanent, providing students with nutritious meals, supporting working families, and strengthening communities.
Stronger, Safer Communities
- New public safety and bail reform measures are tightening bail rules and making it harder for repeat violent offenders to be released:
- Introducing reverse-onus bail for major crimes.
Allowing consecutive sentencing so multiple crimes mean longer prison time. - Imposing harsher penalties for organized retail theft.
- Hiring 1,000 new RCMP personnel to tackle crime, including online fraud, money laundering, and organized criminal networks.
- Partnering with provinces and municipalities to address root causes of crime, including mental health, addictions, and youth programs.
- Introducing reverse-onus bail for major crimes.
- Modernization of the National Public Alerting System for faster, more reliable emergency information across the country.
Growing a Clean, Competitive Economy
- The Trade Diversification Corridors Fund ($5 billion over seven years) supports investments in essential West Coast port and rail infrastructure, helping Canadian and Alberta products reach global markets.
- Becoming our own best customer: Our new Buy Canadian Policy ensures our dollars stay here at home. Whenever possible, our government will choose Canadian suppliers first, to strengthen our supply chains and support local innovation.
- The Building Communities Strong Fund invests $51 billion over ten years in housing-enabling infrastructure (roads, wastewater), as well as health and post-secondary education facilities, in collaboration with provinces and territories.
- The Climate Competitiveness Strategy strengthens the industrial carbon price, provides clarity on greenhouse gas regulations, and invests in critical minerals development.
Alberta and Western Canada remain key drivers of Canada's success. Budget 2025 builds on that strength — supporting local organizations, helping families get ahead, and growing one strong Canadian economy. All my best,
